Whoa! Steve with nothing to say. Must be some kind of cosmic convergence that i'm not aware of or something. I have absolutely no idea how to respond to that! I guess I'll just say nothing.

What's really surprising is how common this is. It must be in the DNA of some people and some companies - the inability to take responsibility. There are more variations of this than Blackberry has apps. I'm far from an expert in either psychology or PR but my solution is a very simple three step process. "Stuff" happens. When it does, first acknowledge it. Then work to correct it and finally keep everyone informed of your progress. This may or may not get the problem solved any faster but it will reduce the fallout.

There is another three step process when "stuff" happens. First, deer in the headlights. Next denial and distancing and finally, when this fails, admission of fault.

I like the first option but everyone has to choose for themselves.

The key to good speaking is even better listening. Listening with all of your senses and not just your ears. Hearing the words but also noticing the body language and sensing the feelings driving the language. And doing it all the time...to gather information always and to track the response you get when speaking.

As John Grinder used to say, "communication is the response your get."

I thought my walks were discretionary, until I stopped. Anxiety and aches ensued which I attributed to too many medical causes that managed to confuse too many doctors. But they agreed and I relearned, that simply walking somewhere quiet clears my mind and heals my body. A twenty minute walk makes hours and days more productive. That's a good payback, a very high ROI.

Thanks for your comment Rick. I find it quite depressing to see how people in the United States have lost any ability to accept responsibility and act for the common...rather than their own...benefit. These people you mention in Japan are a true example of people willing to do good at risk to themselves for the benefit of all.

Heard on NPR radio yesterday the fact that so many senior citizens in Japan are volunteering to help cleanup in the contaminated areas because they said it was their mess and they want to clean it up so the young folks who did not do this need to worry about it. Think that would happen here - doubt it.

Accountability not only in what we do but who we are. Thanks again Steve - right on target

Could not agree more - but then again I just got back from 2 weeks in Alaska - yes you should all put it on your bucket list - funny how one movie changes how we refer to our to do list.

Any way one other thing just as important is to surround yourself with others who are energized as well. I love to meet with Steve because he is energized and we both come away from the meeting with more energy - unless there are multiple glasses of wine - ahhh for another time perhaps.

A group I meet with we call this those with batteries included or those that need folks around them in order to get energized we call batteries not included. I want those with batteries included - don't you?
